The name has gotten from the mantle placed inside the glass globe of this kind of lamps. The origin of its English word comes from the Latin word “mantellum”, one of its meanings is a clock and it is the cover around the flame which is brightened up by the heat and produces white flat light. The mantle is hold on a metal frame which is giving it a dome-like shape. Its fuel depends on the type of the lamp which could be gas or liquid. The advantage of portability makes them popular even in today life and they have adjusted themselves to the technology. Mantle lamps burn the vapor of different fuels to produce heat and light.

It contains a fuel tank, a glass globe, a mantle, a burner, a pump, a gauge, a ventilator and a shade which every one of them has its own different parts in detail. There are various designs of each part for different types and models in different times.

There is a mantle in Benzinkhane Museum in Abadan which is made in Germany, HASAG company, model55. It  was found in Leipzig by Hugo Schneider as an arm manufacturing company in 1863.
