The English word “lamp” is the origin of this word which has local dialects in different parts of our country like Lampa, Lampe and Lempa
There are variety of this kind of lamp in various forms and sizes and kerosene or paraffin is used as a fuel for it.
It is made of a fuel tank or fount (which is made of metal, clay, porcelain or glass), a wick (and a wick holder or burner), an adjustment knob and a glass globe (chimney). The flat cotton wick is controlled by the adjustment knob and the chimney protects the flame against the wind from blacking out.
The lower part of the wick dips into the fount and the top of it extends out into the glass globe. When the lamp is lit, the absorbed kerosene by the flat cotton wick burns and produces a clear, bright and yellow flame and heat. Being smokeless, odorless, clean burning fuel for indoor and outdoor use are its benefits. These kinds of lamps were imported to the country in Qajar Era and they were used plentifuly.
One can see different types of these kinds of lamps which are kept in Benzinkhane Museum and this lamp was made in Hong Kong more than eighty years ago.
